Reunited with Van 2! It took them a little while to find parking and they arrived after Dieter crossed the finish line. So we regrouped and then Dieter re-crossed the finish line with the team.

We made it!

We were very thankful for food and beer and that all the running was now behind us!! We had about 3 hours at the beach while we waited for Van 2. It was a little chilly! We passed the time with some beer, food and ice cream.

Pierre's (and Van 1's) last leg

Despite the dehydration and general illness Pierre experienced yesterday evening, he was feeling fine and running like a champ in his 3rd leg, which included a challenging uphill stint before a steep 3 miles of downhill. (He also did an amazing job on his second leg at around 3am.)

ArribaZiba Van 1 - Nearly Done!

Lizzy had to take off a little early because her sister is leaving for her first year of college tomorrow. It was so great that she was able to join the team - she was a true powerhouse of a runner! Dartmouth is one lucky college to have her.

Since she had to take off early, we took a group shot (sans Pierre, who was running his last leg) at the end of her leg. I think we look pretty good for approximately 100 miles over 24 hours!

Lizzy started feeling a little ill before her final leg. When I met her in the chute for the exchange I was a bit worried about her! But she decided to power through. And what a leg to power through! It was intense uphill for 3 miles and then intense downhill for three miles. I can't believe she did it and, once again, came in under her predicted time. She's amazing!!!

I felt good the whole way through my last leg. I passed an Elk Viewpoint, but couldn't see any Elk - oh well. Other runners are getting a lot friendlier now that we're all a bit more ragged and closer to being done. Here's a shout out to the guy who rang the cowbell louder when I asked for more cowbell.

In the last quarter mile I passed a Honey Bucket truck that had entered the running lane. Yuck! But I made road kill out of him. You'll have to wait for the video blog for the full story!

Andy will have to figure out how to post his video blog because it ROCKS!! (He's probably already figured out how he wants to do that being the computer genius he is.) I thought at first that we should only post a few of the entries, but after watching them all together they do an amazing job of capturing the mood and the event. So stay tuned for his video blog! It's well worth the wait.

8:39 am – My run was tough, I’m glad it’s done. I couldn’t enjoy it as much as my first two. It feels good to be done though! But I’m sooooo tired and my legs reeeeeaaallllyy hurt. I’d been waiting for a bagel and cream cheese all night. I’m so tired now. Andy will be finished soon. He’s had some tough legs – he rocks!
Fun people, lots of music being DJed from the back of a passing van – I think it’s Michael Jackson - everyone is awake now and looking forward to finishing their last leg strong.

It’s 6:30 am, I guess we should probably get up. I’ve never slept so well… on the ground! (Thanks to Heather letting me use her sleeping bag – I was toasty and warm all night long.) I’m wondering if the other team is here yet. We don’t get cell coverage, so we have no way of knowing where they are or when they’ll be here. I could be standing out in the old for hours…I just don’t know.

It’s 2am, we just left Pierre, and now we’re searching for the area where we’ll sleep tonight. I hope Pierre is okay, He hasn’t been feeling well, but decided he was going to run anyway. We’re supposed to meet Dieter and Van 2 at 6:40 tomorrow morning, but we’re just a little behind so maybe we’ll get to sleep another hour.

We’ve arrived at the camping ‘field,’ Lizzy just jumped out of the car – this place is a maze…she’s never going to find us again. ….after parking, we headed to the bathrooms. The camp is a crazy place, tons of car, people in sleeping bags all over the ground, I can’t believe that no one gets run over, Car lights shine through the dusty night air. The sky is clear now with tons of stars, but the clouds are starting to come in and it seems darker. We found Lizzy near the restrooms - that was a relief.

After somewhat successfully navigating back to the van, I have changed and gotten everything ready for tomorrow morning’s run. I roll my mat out and jump into my sleeping back. It’s after 4:30am now and morning will come fast.

Hawthorne Bridge Van Exchange - Friday Night

After a tasty dinner at home and some R&R we headed to the Hawthorne Bridge exchange point (#12).

Van 2 pulled up a couple car lengths ahead of us. When we got to the exchange point, a whole crew of Zibites were there to cheer us on! Jin, Tze, Christian and Josh were there. (Ten and Gillian were also trying to make it, but they weren’t able to get there in time – bummer!) It was so great to see them.

When Dieter came into the chute to hand off to Sabrina, the cheers from the ArribaZiba supporters were out of control! You couldn’t miss us (beside the fact that we had day glo shirts on). ;-)

Van 2 Begins!

The end of Pierre's Leg marked Exchange #6 and the passing of the torch (aka plastic slap-on wrist band) to Van 2. It was about 3pm in Sandy, OR and Pierre arrived at the handoff within a couple minutes of the time the team had predicted. Go Team!

It was great to see the rest of the team - it's too bad we couldn't spend more time with them throughout the race.

Pierre's leg

Pierre's run afforded no shade, and the temperature was creeping up as the sun beat down. Even before Pierre arrived at the exchange where we met Van 2, both vans of us agreed it was brutal!

Despite the heat, Pierre kept his pace through the entire leg and arrived on time. The sun had gotten to him a bit and he was feeling dehydrated and somewhat ill for the next few hours as he rested and rehydrated.

Lizzy's run had plenty of up- and downhill that she powered right through. It was probably the most beautiful of the first legs because on a road with less traffic that went approximately parallel to the highway the rest of us ran along. Being on this smaller road surrounded by lots of trees also afforded good shade, which Lizzy appreciated.

It was getting hard to find shade and the temperature was heating up. It was now Lizzy's turn to run. Being a track star at Dartmouth, she left us all in the dust (and about 10 other runners over the course of her 6+ mile first leg, doubling our roadkill tally!).

Cat powered through her run - she was at least five minutes ahead of her predicted time for her nearly 4 mile leg. That's over a minute faster per mile! Go Cat!!!

Looking at the road ahead, I was feeling pretty good about my run... but 7.18 miles is a pretty long way. I did 7 miles last Saturday, so I knew I could do it. And this was a lot flatter than my practice run. My goal was simply to run all my legs and I felt pretty good about being able to do that.

It was a beautiful run looking up trees towering over me. Since I was running on a highway the traffic was a little loud, but it didn't stop me from keeping up a steady pace. I wound up finishing only a minute over my predicted time. Yay!

Andy was spot on with his predicted time for leg one - and he looked great every time we spotted him along the way.

Then it was Cat's turn. She and her iPod were ready to go!

The rest of the van is tripped out in technology for the exchange - Lizzy has the video camera, Pierre has the clipboard with the PalmPilot time tracking software (thanks Deiter!) and I'm manning the still camera for this one. Quite the team effort! But a very well documented one.

Well, we learned that there is nearly ZERO cell phone reception between Portland and the coast, which explains our lack of blogging for the second half of the race.

This is the bracelet that will travel with each of us across our 197 mile journey, the one thing that ties us together as a team. I think that's cool. It's a lot like a power band, and it's a slap bracelet! very rad. I take it off a few moments before the handoff and wipe it on my shirt so it's not as sweaty when I hand it to Debbie...I'm sure she appreciates this gesture.

I had the good fortune to be host for a crew of Arriba Ziba Hood to Coast running bloggers (or is that blogging runners?) during a quick dinner and short rest after their first legs. In conversation with Debbie about when to see everyone I discovered I had two options, meet in the middle of the night to support the during her run or host dinner at our house at dinner-time. I chose dinner.

We had a nice dinner of spaghetti and sauce with vegetarian meatballs, salad with fresh tomatoes from Debbie and I’s garden, and some fresh beans also from the garden.

Much water was passed around, and some more adventurous spirits tried little glasses of my homebrew, a Kolsch (German-style light blonde ale), which I hope they don’t regret later.

Dinner and beer were proclaimed good. After some showers and naps in hammocks, beds, and couches, the laptops were pulled out so everyone could post to the blog in a blog-frenzy.

I am honored to be part of the blog, without running a step. Run like the wind, Ziba!

Dinner at Debbie's. Round One Over!
Well... we have completed round one of the first of three legs. I am very proud of our Van (Sabrina, Cat, Debbie, Lizzy, Pierre, and of course, me). We all did very well and managed to make our predicted run times give or take a few minutes.

First run... Sabrina started off from the Hood like a champ. We managed to meet her half way to give her water and cheer her on. Shortly after she arrived at the first checkpoint and quickly handed the wrist band off to me.

My leg was titled 'Hard' pfffft... hard. It was a piece of cake. I was sooo pumped from the run and the music I was listening to (AC/DC) that I was air guitaring and singing 'Back in Black' while I was in full stride. Guitar Hero, eat you heart out. Anyway I managed to make it to the next checkpoint one minute over the expected time... ehhhh maybe too much air guitaring.... maybe.

Cat took over after I reached the third checkpoint and she was off with a qiuck start. We managed to meet up with her about half way and provide water and encouragement. She is a rock star at running.

After Cat arrived at the check point Debbie D. took over. Let me first say that she had a hard first leg and I gots to give it up to how she obliterated it in no time.

Speaking of runing to obliterate the pack, Lizzy took over the next run (an uphill leg) and managed to shave off even more of the expected time. At this point we were ahead of schedule by about 6 minutes.

Once Lizzy got to the next checkpoint Pierre took the hand-off. He.... OMG.... He had the toughest leg so far (7.4 miles in the heat). But, like the champ he is he finished well to hand the next six legs over to Van 2 in Sandy.

We will be meeting them in Portland this evening around nineish.

Verizon Wireless card for van 2
So it seems the card is currently in the possesion of Brandon. And will not make it here in time for Van 2 to have it. So some sort of sharing will have to occur between the vans with the blogging and posting.

It's beautiful up here! The mountain is beautiful, great music, lots of people, blue skies. 30 minutes to start....6+ miles straight down -- it's going to be great! See you at government camp.

Van 1 on the Road!!!
We're truckin' through Sandy behind a HTC team that (their van claims) has been doing HTC for 22 years. How many years has Ziba been doing HTC?

This is about the time that a member of another Hood to Coast team came running up to us and asked us for a ride. It turned out that one of his team members had the keys to their van and he ran about 2 miles to get to the Timberline lot, then his van left without him and he ran another 2 or 3 miles downhill trying to find them. We gave him a ride (and learned that he had just joined that team because it was mostly cute, eligable girls) and found his van at the first exchange point. Weird!!

We arrived at the Timberline at around 11:15 and spent a while streching and getting psyched up for the run. We definitely had the coolest looking van.
There were many good costumes. Sabrina wound up running with Robin Hood (he ran with his mask on the entire way!) and a guy in a kilt.
